Joseph Lane was born in North Carolina December 14, 1801, and moved to Kentucky when he was three years old. At age fourteen Lane moved away from his family to Indiana. At the age of twenty-one Lane married Mary Hart Polly. The couple had eight children. From 1822 to 1846, Lane served in the Indiana State Legislature. Joel Palmer was born October 4, 1810 in Elizabethtown, Ontario, Canada to Ephraim and Anna Palmer. When Joel was two his family fled the ravages of the War of 1812 and settled in the frontier village of Lowville in northern New York. At the age of twelve Joel was "bound out" (a form of indentured servitude) to the Haworth family in the Catskill Mountains.
